WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?
Essential oils are compounds extracted from plants. They can be extracted from most parts of the plant, including the flowers, bark, roots, fruit, seeds, fruit and skin. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years, dating back as early as 3,500BC in Egypt China and India.
HOW DO YOU USE ESSENTIAL OILS?
Two ways of absorbing the therapeutic properties of natural, essential oils are by inhalation or by topical application.
When inhaled, the molecules in the oils activate the olfactory receptors in the nose where nerves then send signals to the brain’s limbic system, awakening the mind and body, triggering emotions, and evoking memories of a time, place or event from the past. Physically, the limbic system plays a part in controlling physiological functions like heart rate and blood pressure, which can help our body feel relaxed.
When used topically oil molecules are absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream and circulate to systems and organs throughout the body. Oils can also have a very positive, nourishing effect on the skin, like Ylang Ylang which is perfect for balancing and soothing skin, and Frankincense, renowned for its benefits to ageing skin and wrinkles.
A VERY DURABLE ITEM TO HAVE
Both body and facial massage can benefit from the intoxicating aroma of essential oils. Always ensure that you add the essential oil to a carrier oil first, and never apply directly to your skin. A carrier oil, also known as a base oil, is used to dilute essential oils before they are applied to the skin. Carrier oils can include Almond Oil, Avocado Oil and even Olive Oil.
There is no better way to unwind than in an essential oil bath, calming oils like Lavender and Clary Sage are especially relaxing. Add 5-10 drops in a bath and disperse vigorously before entering the bath.
This is a really good way of helping to relieve blocked sinuses or congestion. Eucalyptus is one of the most popular oils. Fill a large bowl with hot (not boiling water), add 3-4 drops of your chosen oil then lean over the bowl placing a towel over your head and slowly breathe in the until you start to feel relief.
There are many diffusers available, one of the most popular being an ultrasonic diffuser which uses water to create a fine mist. These are a great way of enjoying oils throughout the day in your home or office space. Citrus oils are particularly uplifting. Ideally leave your diffuser on for up to an hour at a time, leaving it off for a similar amount of time.
It is estimated that 43% of people suffering from anxiety and stress use some form of alternative therapy to combat their symptoms.
The remarkable benefits of essential oil have been enjoyed throughout the centuries, and their delightful aromas have an amazing effect on our mood, mind, body and spirit. Essential oil fragrances have a powerful effect that can evoke feelings, emotions, memories and events. The potent aromas can also have a positive effect on our wellbeing, helping to alleviate feelings of anxiety, stress and depression, uplifting our emotions and spirits to enhance mood, and gently relaxing our mind and body to allow us to relax, sleep well, and feel revived.
Just because something is natural that doesn't mean that it's safe.
When used correctly most essential oils are considered safe. However, you must also consider others in your environment who could inhale the aromas, children, your pets and pregnant women.
Do not use undiluted on the skin. Do not ingest essential oils. Avoid contact with eyes, ears, mucous membranes, and sensitive areas. If you are pregnant, nursing, or using prescription medication, consult your Doctor or qualified health care practitioner before using essential oils. Not recommended for use on children under 12 years. Store in a cool dry place, out of reach and sight of children.
