YOUR BODY - Mindfulness•
Posted on April 24 2019
Mindfulness is a word we hear a lot nowadays but what does it mean?
Simply put mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment (in your mind, body and surroundings) without judging anything.
Mindfulness can help us enjoy life more and understand ourselves better. It is easy to stop noticing the world around us when our lives are so full and busy. We get caught up in our own thoughts and stop noticing how our thoughts drive our emotions and behaviour.
Practising mindfulness allows us to reconnect with our bodies and the sensations it experiences. We then start to take note of the sights sounds, smells and tastes of the present moment making us more self-aware, calmer and able to cope with difficult or unhelpful thoughts.
As well as practising mindfulness in our daily life it can be beneficial to set aside a more formal mindfulness practice - meditation.
Meditation is a well-known tool that helps maintain mental, emotional and physical health. It allows us to reflect and focus on areas of our life that may need a little extra attention.
Mindfulness meditation couldn't be easier. Take a good seat, pay attention to your breath, and when your attention wanders, return your focus back to your breath. It is not only your state of mind that benefits from regular meditation but your body as well.
A thought that occurs in the mind causes a chemical and physical reaction to occur in the body. Stress is very much a mental problem which translates into your body and the effects of stress should not be ignored. The key to making meditation work for you is consistency, the more you practice the better you become. Try it and you will soon start to notice the positive effect meditation has on your life.
