Tips to relax and improve your mood

Most people experience stress or anxiety at some point in their lives. For some people, they are a regular, often daily, occurrence.

While many people are resilient to stress and anxiety and can shake off negative feelings quite easily without any long-term effects, others struggle and become overwhelmed.

When this happens, it can severely impact their mood, mental wellbeing, and overall health. Everyday life can be challenging, and the stresses and strains can be difficult to overcome. However, you can do several simple things to relax and improve your mood when things get too much. Here are a few ideas for inspiration… 

 

EXERCISE

You probably won’t be too surprised to learn that when it comes to improving your mental – and physical – health, exercise is at the top of the list. here are several reasons why.

The first is that doing a physical activity can help you take your mind off whatever was bothering you, as you focus on what you are doing. Secondly, exercise can help release feelgood hormones, like endorphins and cortisol, into your body, helping lift your mood and make you feel better. If you exercise to the point of physical exhaustion, it can help you achieve better relaxation and sleep, as your body will find it much easier to shut down to repair itself.

And finally, if you regularly exercise, it can help improve your physical condition and appearance, which, in turn, can boost your confidence and self-esteem.

 

NATURAL SUPPLEMENTS

Nutrition plays a crucial role in relieving stress and anxiety and promoting overall good mood and mental health.

However, it can be hard to get the nutrients you need from your diet alone.

Alcohol, on the other hand, can exacerbate low mood and depression.
So, if you feel anxious or stressed, going for a walk in the fresh air, having a nice cup of tea or a healthy snack is often a better bet than reaching for the wine bottle and the cigarettes, or knocking back a cheeky Red Bull.

 

TALK IT OUT

One way to handle stress and anxiety is to talk about your feelings with another person. That could be your partner, a family member, close friend, work colleague or even your doctor.

They say that a problem shared is a problem halved, so getting someone else’s perspective on whatever you are struggling with can help you work it out.
If you’re not ready to share the way you’re feeling with someone else, then writing it down in a journal can be a good way of getting things out of your head and off your chest.

 

SPEND TIME WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY

Support from your friends and family can help you get through stressful times.
It can help you take your mind off things when they get too much and focus your attention on something else.

It can also prevent you from becoming isolated. Research has found that people with the fewest social connections are the most likely to suffer from depression and anxiety, so reach out to people, and spend time doing the things you enjoy with the people you love.

 

LAUGH MORE

They say laughter is the best medicine for a reason. It’s good for your health, can lift your mood and help you take your mind off your worries.

Laughter helps in several ways. It helps relieve your stress response, can relax your muscles and relieve tension. It also releases endorphins, the feel good hormones that positively impact your mood and boost your immune system.

 

 

SET BOUNDARIES

While certain things that cause stress and anxiety are beyond your control, there are also things you can change.The key here is to take control over the parts of your life that you can, by setting boundaries and learning to say no more often. Being selective about what you take on – especially at work, if you’re being asked to do things that are over and above what your role entails – can help reduce your stress levels and make it easier to switch off and relax.

Interacting with your furry friends can help reduce stress and improve your mood. Playing with your pets helps to release Oxytocin, a hormone that promotes positive mental health. Caring for an animal can also help relieve stress and anxiety by giving you focus and keeping you active. Of course, looking after your pet’s health and wellbeing is just as important as looking after your own.
